 Chapter 3 (Cont.)

I was looking at the hypothesised location of the scientist' ultimate respite, it is roughly 7 steps away from the backdoor of the car. Well, Lucky 7, you died peacefully before you experienced the horrors within the walls. GuerreLexicon Research's attempt at restoring viability outside the high-priority zones was not to restore it to an organic state, but to make it temperate for the New World humans, who were genetically and cybernetically modified. I am inside one such vulgar body now and what could I complain about? No organic species of the Old World, whether stationary or motioned, can live in the exposed area of the New World. Not in their natural sense; the most resilient of non-humans still thrive in remote parts of the wasteland, albeit in drastically mutated forms. Even more wondrous is that those species who had favoured communal lifestyle has retained that sense, there were still enclaves of wildlife surviving in packets across the exposed world. From looking at the picturebooks of Old World encyclopedia, you could not tell what they used to be, however. There were even rumours and speculations about human mutants surviving in very remote areas. Those were the ghosts from the new world. They still persists in this Earth as remnants and reminders of a monumental world-change. Without any technological aid, their survival had depended on pure chance and protective locations. Places such as underground bunkers and metro networks, although safer than bare grounds, were not a match for the precise artificial measures of the high-priority zones. Even if we say that one such safe place was completely touched unharmed, the people occupying these places would still not have the cybernetic changes that would allow them complete safety. Places like these would have a lot of brave souls, who would leave safety of their fateful anchorage, with protection as little as hazmat suits and masks, to secure resources. All of the technical knowledge within their reachability had been laid to ruins. They could not even improve the hazmat suits somehow unless experts were among the survivors. There were experts but they did not have enough manpower or resources. Work with what we have: we can't miraculously expect experts to show up here but let's try getting the resources. Brave men steps outside in hazmat suits that were made with radioactivity of much smaller scale in mind. This is like trying to secure a chest from a pond filled with sharks: the stage of action is drastically reduced and the dangers are through the pondroof; it's a race against time in a post-Herculean ardour.
