I. (Cont.)The King inspected the white boy again closely and his brows contorted slightly. He usually pays heed to Shashibhusan's words. He then summoned a servant named Harihar and asked him to gather information regarding the boy's prescence.
The King did not remain there for long afterwards. A servant just has come in saying that the archqueen is waiting for him.
Today, the queen herself, as per tradition, takes up the duty to dress the King. All day long, she made garlands on her own, assembled rosewater and chandan too. Maharaja Birchandra Manikya is a Vaishya by heart, during the feast he will not dress in royal outfit and forego wearing the crown as well. Mahadevi Vanumoti began dressing the King, while he murmured excerpts from a tune. The King is a fanatic for music and his singing voice is equally excellent.
Regarding the exact number of wives and subwives bethroted to him, even the King himself would be in confusion. Many times, due to political and diplomatic reasons, it becomes necessary to form spousal bonds with neighbouring kingdoms; daughters from many intrastate provinces of Assam and Tripura are in the capital as his wives. Aside from that, many tribal leaders arrange young women for him as gifts and they eventually make their place in the royal palace. They are called Kachua and a few of them sometimes, although rare, gain the king's favours. Without an official wedding however, the Kachua do not get recognised as the King's wives in the palace.
