I (Cont.)

Maybe all of these are merely stories, speculations, legends curated to inflate his grandiosity. The past few centuries of regional kings hardly had any similarities with North Indian Aryans in terms of appearance. Rather they have much more in common with the local tribal folks. In recent times, the kings of this dynasty were taking beautiful women from Monipur as royal brides; maybe due to that admixture the later descendants have had a clear Mongoloid mark on their bodies and faces.

Maharaja Birchandra Manikya is a physically adept man of medium height. The most immediately noticeable feature on his face, which emanated an aura of profoundly cultivated personality, is the thick mustache. The speciality of this mustache is that even though it spreads far on the both side of his lips, the area beneath the philtrum is shaved. And although Maharaja is approaching the later period of his life, he has flourishing youth in the way he carries himself. Just few moments ago he arrived at the capital, on a horse, steadfast throughout the whole long journey. To carry out the familial-rite obligations, the king was in Udaypur for worship purposes at the Tripurasundarya temple. He had to be present in the capital during Vijayadashami, hence the swift return.

It is late afternoon but the sun still has not sunk into the horizon; rather is, for the time being, suspended on a beautifully pleasant stretch of the sky. In its fulfilling light, the surroundings are shining in a serene-vibrant demeanour. The clamour of sacrificial rites has already started. The Maharaja, however, will not attend the rally of Durga-idol submergence by himself; carrying the Mangalghat to the waters, instead, will be his eldest son, crown prince Radhakishor.
